As and when the GST refund application is filed by the registered person, before disbursement of the refund amount, the application will have to undergo the following stages-

STAGE 1 – Processing of GST refund application by the tax officer; and

STAGE 2 – Bank account validation by the Public Financial Management System (i.e., PFMS)

Importantly, here, bank account validation will be done twice. Firstly, after filing a refund application in Form GST RFD-01 by the taxpayer and secondly, after issuing a payment order in Form GST RFD-05 by the tax officer.

Steps to track the GST refund status via GST portal

How to track GST refund status

The registered person is required to follow the below steps in order to track the GST refund status

Step-1

Go to site https://www.gst.gov.in/ and click ‘Login’ available on the right-hand side

Step-2

Provide the following Login credentials-

  • Username;
  • Password; and
  • Characters as shown in the box.

Step-3

Navigate the following path-

Services > Refunds > Track Application Status.

Step-4

Either select ‘Filing Year’ from the drop-down list or enter ARN and click SEARCH.

Step-5

Based on the search criteria, GST refund status would be displayed. Scroll to the right so as to view the ‘Payment Advice Status’.

Notably, for the above steps, the registered person is required to Login into the GST website i.e. https://www.gst.gov.in/.

However, by following the below steps, GST refund status can be tracked without Login into the GST website-

Step-2

Navigate the path Services > Refunds > Track Application Status.

Step-3

Enter the appropriate ARN.

Note: It is important to note here that only short detailing of GST refund status would be provided by following the above steps.

Steps to track GST refund status on account of IGST paid on export of goods

Following steps are to be followed when the registered person is willing to check the GST refund status of IGST paid on export of goods-

Step-1

Go to site https://www.gst.gov.in/ and click ‘Login’.

Step-2

To ‘Login’ to the GST website, enter the appropriate ‘Username’; ‘Password’ and characters shown in the box.

Step-3

Navigate the path Services > Refunds > Track status of invoice data to be shared with ICEGATE.

Step-4

Select the ‘Financial Year’ and ‘Month’ from the drop-down list for which the refund application is filed.

Please note, if the registered person files the GST return on a quarterly basis, then, select the last month of the respective quarter under the ‘Month’ column above.

Click ‘SEARCH’

Steps to track the bank account validation via PFMS portal

As seen above, it is at most important to successfully undergo bank account validation for obtaining a GST refund.

The registered person is required to follow the below steps in order to track the bank account validation post filing of GST refund application in Form GST RFD-01 via PFMS portal-

Step-1

Go to https://pfms.nic.in/NewDefaultHome.aspx.

Step-2

Select ‘GSTN Tracker’ from the icon/ option available on the left-hand side.

Step-3

Enter either GSTIN number or Account number. Also, enter the letters shown in the image.

Step-4

Click ‘View Report’.

However, the registered person is required to follow the below steps to track the bank account validation post issuance of refund order in Form GST RFD-05 via PFMS portal-

  • Go to https://pfms.nic.in/NewDefaultHome.aspx.
  • Select ‘GSTN Tracker’ from the icon/ option available on the left-hand side.
  • Out of the three options available, select ‘GST Successfully Processed’.
  • Enter either GSTIN number or Account number.
  • Enter GST RFD-05. Please note entering of GST RFD-05 is optional.
  • Enter the letters shown in the box.
  • Click view report.

  • Mismatch of IFSC code,
  • IFSC code inactive in PFMS,
